02 SKETCH

Female Bodies

As a female neon practitioner in the male-dominant neon industry in Hong Kong, I hope to empower and enhance female capability and inspiration through my work.

With a collective of international women’s bodies images collected amongst my friends, I wish to feature their bodyscapes and express the idea of “Every body is a beach body” through an organic heart shape achieved from glass blowing and neon bending.

Every silhouette in the work speaks different stories: some women have just laboured, some ladies are mums-to-be, there is a strong woman who is a breast cancer survivor, there are little girls who are still growing and can’t wait to blossom… everyone is experiencing a different life stage here, and break through the insecurities of their bodies and share their confidence of the bodies as they are with me.

The design draft that is based on 17 body silhouettes of my female friends.

03 IDEA

Self-love

The work celebrates all kinds of female bodies despite their shape and skin colour. The heart shape also illustrates self-love and the courage from those women who submitted their images with a different level of self-confidence in their bodies.

A big shout out to all the girls who shared their images with me. Without their courage and self-confidence, this work won’t be able to realise: Amber, Celina, Christine, Christy, Clarissa, Feli, Hailey, Jaime, Jess, Lezlie, Lillian, Lulu, Maggie, Nog, Stefanie, Vanessa, Yagmur

The bodyscape becomes not just a celebration of physicality, but also a reflection of internal landscapes: the emotions, stories, and strength that each woman carries within her.
The work speaks to themes of universality and interconnectedness: bodies as a metaphorical “landscape” akin to the Earth’s terrain, each with its own unique curves, textures, and layers shaped by time and experience. Much like the natural world, these bodies are diverse yet share a common beauty and purpose. The use of light here emphasizes the transformative power of vulnerability and visibility—it allows these unseen or often overlooked narratives to glow in a shared space, fostering empathy and connection.

The glowing silhouettes serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between embracing individual identities and nurturing the collective, much like how we must balance our relationship with the natural world. The organic shape, reminiscent of landscapes and natural forms, blurs the line between human and environment, reflecting how both are deeply intertwined and dependent on one another.

The exhibition’s theme of light as a gateway to other worlds aligns seamlessly with the intention of this piece. Each silhouette represents a unique “world” of its own, shaped by life experiences such as motherhood, growth, survival, and self-acceptance. By illuminating these bodies in neon—a medium historically associated with commercialism and urbanity—the work reframes neon as a vessel of intimate storytelling and emotional resonance. It bridges the gap between the personal and the universal, inviting viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of our lives and the worlds we carry within us.

By bringing together the themes of light, bodyscape, and environment, this work at “Worlds Aglow” creates a dialogue between personal empowerment and broader societal connections. It challenges viewers to not only appreciate the beauty and strength of female bodies but also to consider their relationship with the spaces they inhabit—both physical and metaphorical. It is a celebration of humanity’s inner glow, the light within us all, and the other worlds we create through connection, resilience, and self-love.
